At
the end of World War II, Marta Reutter, an experienced teacher, was
uncertain of the job opportunities in the field of education during that
turbulent time. A natural artistic talent prompted her to begin studies in
the field of pottery and ceramics. After three years of study, her
graduation assignment was a collection of miniature ceramics for her
instructor’s daughter’s dollhouse. Thus began a lifetime career that
centered on small and miniature ceramic and porcelain products for
children.
In the beginning the Reutter
products were hand made in ceramic, this required a great deal of work for even a
limited production. By 1952 the economic recovery of Germany was well on
its way and the demand for miniature, decorative and children’s items
was rapidly increasing. The production of the small Reutter factory was
overwhelmed by the demand.
Marta’s husband Willy Reutter, a
trained engineer, stepped in at this time to bring about the necessary
production changes. New machinery, moulds and kilns were developed to
enable the switch from the handmade ceramic to the poured porcelain
product necessary to increased production. As transportation at this time
was a major expense, the decision was made to continue with the smaller
pieces to save transport of the raw material. Because the Reutter factory
was isolated from the German Ceramic Industry, it became necessary to
develop their own unique shapes and designs.
Through the years the
